  69. I would have hoped that most civilised people would realize that the days of 
  70. technical afficionados, you know the ones that say "talk to you on 600 ohms" 
  71. instead of "call you on the phone" are long gone.

  73. Amateur Radio is a method of radio communications intended for 
  74. communications training, experimentation, international goodwill and 
  75. anything else that is not a business. In the US, Canada, Australia and other 
  76. places, Amateur Radio has a high profile because it is a public service. 
  77. Radio hams can help people in need, pass messages without wondering who may 
  78. be listening, call the police or ambulances when the need arises, pass on 
  79. messages on behalf of third parties and soon. In the UK, and most of Europe, 
  80. thats pretty much out of the picture because it is not allowed. Even the UK 
  81. license says "license granted for the purposes of self-training in Radio 
  82. Communications." Why is it just that?

  84. Why does it not say that you can participate in public events, perform 
  85. public service, help an old lady call her sister somewhere else, call home 
  86. from a mobile when late so your kid knows nothing happened to you, and so 
  87. on? Why are such actions seen as cutting-into the profits of the 
  88. telecommunications companies? Has anyone ever done any research into the 
  89. subject of what it would happen if traffic was allowed? Doesnt the UK 
  90. realize how much it would help if this was done. Just thinkof the increase 
  91. in the profile. After all the UK leads Europe in liberalizing 
  92. communications?

  94. To change things you need to take action. You need to 1/realize why there 
  95. must be change, 2/why it would be much better with change and 3/take action 
  96. to change it.

  98. Even the third party traffic with special events stations(currently allowed 
  99. in the UK), came as a result of the Falklands war (so that residents of the 
  100. Falklands could talk to their folks back home) not exactly a peacetime 
  101. public service.

  103. So, before anyone takes a snipe at the US amateur radio system, which is the 
  104. freer and the most flexible in terms of public service in the world, think 
  105. about what you could do to help your country match it.The RSGB has the power 
  106. and members to make changes, but if the people at the top dont understand 
  107. what the point is, then you might as well forget it.
